I guess our studio is a little bit dusty since although I cleaned the plexi glass before the shoot there was hundreds of small dust particles that I had to remove in post. Also the background was removed and replaced with pure black since this picture is probably going to a black poster.
I have seen several different takes similar to this one on the internet but it’s such a good idea that wanted to try one for myself too. Black and white version did not work as good as I hoped so I left a little bit of color to the photo. All pictures where taken separately and half of them are actually taken in a different part of Finland.
Had to do some push ups to get this picture. I was between two chairs to get my feet up in the air. I guess I should do more exercise since after ten or more pictures my hands started to be pretty tired…
“Illusion of Light” That is the theme for this month in local camera club. I took it quite literally and made a picture that has illusionist with a light bulb. At editing stage I added glowing wire from another photo and then quite strong bleach bypass effect. I think it fits to this “dark magician” theme.
I made a short video (in Finnish) about setting up simple one light studio setup. I use came club studio and my purpose was to show how easy it is to take a decent portrait in with studio lights.
We needed some camera gear photos for camera club documentation so I opened my light tent and started taking some pictures. I blowed (Amazon) all the lenses before photographing but I still had to remove dust in Photoshop quite a lot.
Another picture to the book. That rope loses lot of fibers quickly. Black shirt was covered with those and although I try wipe them off I had to do lot of cleaning in Photoshop too. It’s good idea to wipe your display too when cleaning picture like that. I tried to remove some real dust on the display with spot healing brush tool. Somehow it didn’t work…
Local Camera Club now has studio lights and this idea was perfect opportunity to give them a test drive. Another camera clubber was helping me and we took full row with black shirts and then some variations with red shirt. I ended up using the one that is similar to black shirt pictures. Although people try to be individuals they end up being the same mass after all.
Pretty simple setup. Used grid in beauty dish (Amazon) to get tight light to the hands. Black and white conversion in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 (Amazon). Masked some red back to wrists after wards.
I decided to play with different lights. I had fluorescent work light (Amazon) and Nissin Di866 flash (Amazon). I used fluorescent light to show movement in 4s exposure. I set flash to rear sync so it light up the face at the end of the exposure. At the start of the exposure I kept my head steady for a while then moved it forward slowly until flash fired. This way I got ghostly movement and bright face in one exposure.
